📜 Clos de Vougeot
A famous red grand cru behind a stone wall, created by Cistercian monks.
Clos de Vougeot is a famous grand cru in the Côte de Nuits, Burgundy. "Clos" means an enclosed vineyard: the plot is surrounded by a stone wall. The area is about fifty hectares, one of the largest grands crus in the region.
The vineyard was created by Cistercian monks of the Cîteaux abbey. They began to plant vines here in the 12th century. They studied the plots inside the single wall and noticed that wine from different parts differed. According to tradition, this is how the idea of terroir arose in Burgundy. Later the land was divided among many owners: today there are several dozen.
The wine is made from Pinot Noir. It is red and rich, with aromas of cherry, plum and spice, and firm tannin. Because of the many owners, quality depends strongly on the particular producer and on the place on the slope: the upper part is better, the lower simpler.
The château of Clos de Vougeot hosts the celebrations of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin. It is a still wine and is considered one of the symbols of Burgundy.
