📍 Lemnos
A volcanic island, home of the Limnio grape.
Lemnos is a volcanic island in the northern part of the Aegean Sea. It belongs to the Aegean Islands. It is one of the oldest wine lands of Greece: in Greek mythology the forge of the god Hephaestus stood here, and King Euneus, son of Jason, sent wine to the Achaeans at Troy. The volcanic character of the island is still visible, although volcanic activity ceased long ago; another ancient name of the island, Aethaleia, also recalls it.
Two main grapes grow on Lemnos. Limnio is a local red from which wine has been made for more than two thousand years; it gives wines with a scent of spice and herbs. Muscat of Alexandria grows everywhere and gives sweet wines, as well as an unusual dry white wine with a strong Muscat aroma.
The island's wines are protected as PDOs: Lemnos (a dry white from Muscat of Alexandria) and Muscat of Lemnos (sweet). Red wines from Limnio are made in the region too.
Lemnos is a quiet island for those looking for wines with character and history. The island is also known for the cheese Kalathaki Limnou (PDO). Besides wine and cheese, the island is famous for its yogurt.
