📍 La Palma

Appellation ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 6

An island with high volcanic vineyards.

La Palma is one of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, west of Africa. The island is volcanic and very mountainous: vineyards grow on slopes from a few dozen to over a thousand metres. The soils are black volcanic ash and lava.

The wine zone has three districts: Norte de La Palma, Fuencaliente and Hoyo de Mazo. Fuencaliente in the south is known for the blackest volcanic soils. Vineyards often grow on terraces, and the vines are trained low to the ground to protect them from the wind.

The main white grapes are Malvasía, Listán Blanco and Albillo, the main red is Negramoll among others, including País. Dry whites, reds and sweet wines are made; sweet Malvasías with notes of apricot and honey are especially famous.

La Palma is part of the Canary Islands and of Spain. There is little vineyard land, and the wines reach the mainland in small quantities, so collectors prize them. Sweet Malvasías go well with local cheeses and desserts, and dry whites with fish and spicy mojo sauces. The name La Palma on a label shows that the grapes grew in this very area, which makes it easy to look for similar wines.
