A sweet wine from Malvasia on the Aeolian Islands off Sicily.

Malvasia delle Lipari is a sweet wine from Malvasia from the Lipari Islands, also called the Aeolian Islands, off the northern coast of Sicily. The islands are volcanic: on one of them, Stromboli, the volcano is still active. The main vineyards lie on the island of Salina.

The wine is made from the Malvasia di Lipari grape. A little of the red grape Corinto Nero may be added. The grapes are picked ripe, then some of the bunches are dried in the sun on mats so the sugar becomes concentrated. Such a wine is called passito. A simpler version, a natural sweet wine, also exists.

The taste is amber and thick, yet not heavy: apricot, honey, dried flowers and a slight minerality from the volcanic soil. It is served chilled, with desserts, cheese or as an after-dinner drink.

The name is protected as a PDO, a protected designation of origin. The wine is tied to the islands as a special place where heat, wind and volcanic soil shape the taste.
