🧑💼 Salesperson
Also known as: shop assistant, seller
Sells dairy products in a shop or at a market.
A salesperson sells dairy products to shoppers, in a shop, at a market or in a farm shop. They greet customers, help them choose, answer questions and take payment.
In the dairy section, the salesperson makes sure products are kept cold and that nothing on the shelves is past its date. If a product is sold by weight, such as cheese, cottage cheese, sour cream or butter, the salesperson cuts, weighs and wraps the amount needed. A good salesperson knows how one cheese differs from another and how to store food at home.
At a farmers' market the seller is often the farmer or someone from their family. They sell their own milk, cream, butter, cheese and ice cream. Shoppers value these markets for freshness and handmade cheeses. In the past, shoppers almost never handled the goods themselves: the shop assistant fetched them from behind the counter. Self-service was invented by an American, Clarence Saunders. His first Piggly Wiggly store opened in 1916. Since then, sales staff have done more and more helping and advising, while shoppers take goods from the shelf themselves.
