📍 Muntenia and Oltenia Hills
The southern foothills of the Carpathians.
The Muntenia and Oltenia Hills form a wine area in southern Romania, in the foothills of the Carpathians. It is a historic region that includes several known zones.
It includes Dealu Mare, Pietroasa, Drăgășani, Ștefănești, Sâmburești, Segarcea, Mehedinți and Banu Mărăcine. The Muntenia Hills and the Oltenia Hills give wines from different grapes. Reds are grown most: Fetească Neagră, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Among whites, Tămâioasă Românească, an aromatic Muscat-type grape, is known. The climate is moderately hot with a long summer, so the reds come out ripe and rich.
Dealu Mare is regarded as one of the best red-wine areas of Romania. Drăgășani is known for whites and reds in an old-school style. The area is part of Romanian wine and differs from other regions of the country such as Moldavia or Transylvania. For wine lovers it is interesting for combining international and local grapes. The wines are served with meat dishes, cheese and Romanian cuisine, for example mămăligă with meat.
