📍 Banat Hills
The west of the country near Timișoara.
The Banat Hills are a wine region in western Romania, around the city of Timișoara, near the borders with Serbia and Hungary. The name comes from the historic region of Banat, once shared between three countries. The climate is mild, with temperate continental features: warm summers and a long autumn.
It includes the wine districts of Recaș, Viile Carașului and Viile Timișului. The best known is Recaș, home to one of the largest wineries in Romania. The mild climate suits both red and white grapes.
The main local red grape is Fetească Neagră (black). Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir are also grown, and among whites Sauvignon Blanc, Welschriesling and Chardonnay. Much of the region's winemaking is linked to German settlers (Swabians) who came here in the 18th century under the Habsburgs.
The Banat Hills are part of Romanian winemaking and lie farther from the Carpathians than Transylvania, so the wines are softer and more delicate. Red Fetească Neagră suits grilled meat, and the whites river fish. The name Banat Hills on a label shows that the grapes grew in this very area, which makes it easy to look for similar wines.
