🗺️ Romanian wine
The country's wine and winemaking: regions, grapes, appellations.
Romanian wine is the wine and winemaking of Romania. The country in southeastern Europe is one of the largest grape-growing countries on the continent. Grapes have been grown here for millennia, since the time of the ancient Dacians and Romans.
Vineyards lie in several wine regions: the Transylvanian Plateau, the Moldavian Hills, the Hills of Muntenia and Oltenia, the Banat Hills, the Crișana and Maramureș Hills, the Dobrogea Hills, the Danube Terraces and the Sands of the south. The Carpathians divide the country, and the climate runs from cool in Transylvania to warm by the Black Sea.
The country has many local grapes. Reds include Fetească Neagră, Băbească Neagră and Negru de Drăgășani. Whites include the Fetească family, including Fetească Albă and Fetească Regală. Still, sparkling and sweet wines are made from them.
Romanian wine is part of the wines of Europe. Inside the country most wine is drunk at home, while the share of quality bottles in exports is growing.
