📍 Drăgășani
Hills by the Olt River with local grapes.
Drăgășani is a wine district in southern Romania, in Vâlcea County, on the hills by the Olt river. It belongs to the Hills of Muntenia and Oltenia wine zone. It is one of Romania's best-known districts for white and red wines from local grapes.
The main white grape is Crâmpoșie Selecționată, a local variety with high acidity that is hardly found outside this district. It gives dry, light wines with citrus aromas. Another local grape is Tămâioasă Românească (Romanian Muscat), used for dry and sweet wines. The red Negru de Drăgășani gives wines with a cherry flavour. Sauvignon Blanc is also grown and often blended with local grapes.
Soils are sandy and clayey, on terrace slopes above the river. The climate is temperate continental with a long warm autumn.
Drăgășani is part of the Hills of Muntenia and Oltenia. Wine has been made here since ancient times, and today well-known wineries have modern cellars and welcome visitors. Crâmpoșie suits fish and vegetables, and the reds roast meat. The name Drăgășani on a label shows that the grapes grew in this very area, which makes it easy to look for similar wines.
