Wine region ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 5 Updated:

A cool plateau with aromatic whites.

The Transylvanian Plateau is a cool wine area in the centre of Romania. It lies higher than the country's main lowland vineyards, inside the arc of the Carpathian Mountains. Winters are cold and summers cool, but autumn is warm and lets the grapes ripen.

The main wine zones of the plateau are Târnave, Alba Iulia, Sebeș-Apold, Aiud and Lechința. They are united under the name Dealurile Transilvaniei, the hills of Transylvania. The climate suits aromatic white wines. Fetească Regală, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc grow here. The wines are fresh, with good acidity and floral notes.

The Transylvanian Plateau belongs to Romanian wine. Vineyards here have existed for a very long time, and their history is linked to Roman and German settlers. Today the region attracts wine lovers with interesting whites and sparkling wines, which do well in the cool climate. It shows that Romanian wine is not only the hot south.
