📜 Muscat de Rivesaltes
A sweet fortified Muscat wine of Roussillon.
Muscat de Rivesaltes is a sweet fortified muscat wine from Roussillon in the south of France. It is a protected designation of origin (PDO). It is a white wine made from muscat varieties: Muscat Blanc (small-berried) and Muscat of Alexandria.
The wine is classed as a vin doux naturel, that is, a sweet fortified wine. Grape spirit is added to the fermenting must, fermentation stops, and part of the sugar remains. This makes the wine sweet and aromatic, smelling of orange, grapes and flowers. Alcohol content is higher than in ordinary wine.
Roussillon is warm and dry, and its sun gives the berries a lot of sugar. Muscat de Rivesaltes is drunk chilled, as an aperitif or with desserts, fruit and blue cheeses. It is related to other sweet muscats of the south of France. For those who like sweet wines it is a simple and pleasant choice. It is drunk in small servings.
