🍇 País
A red grape brought to the Americas by the Spanish; the oldest variety in Chile.
País is a red grape that the Spanish brought to the Americas in the 16th century. In Chile it is known as the country’s oldest variety. In California it is called the Mission grape, and in Argentina Criolla. In Spain the same variety is known as Listán Prieto and is grown in the Canary Islands.
País gave simple wines for local people: light, fruity and low in strength. It was grown on old vines that were neither irrigated nor treated. In recent years, however, interest in it has grown. Young winemakers have started to make interesting wines from old vineyards, fresh and berry-like.
The grape belongs to Spanish wine, since its home is Spain. Its descendants include Torrontés, Cereza and Criolla Grande, many of which arose in the Americas from crosses of País with Muscat of Alexandria.
This grape shows how vines and wine travelled with people. It is a reminder that the winemaking of the New World came from Spain. Alcohol is for adults.
