🍷 Porrón
A Catalan glass vessel with a spout for drinking from a stream.
The porrón is a Catalan glass wine vessel with a long spout. You drink from it without touching it with your lips: wine pours in a thin stream into the mouth. The name comes from a Catalan word. It originates in Catalonia, Aragon and neighbouring regions of Spain.
A porrón looks like a carafe with a narrow neck and a thin spout. It is held at arm's length above the head and tilted so the stream lands in the mouth. This has to be learned, or the wine ends up on your clothes. Usually the porrón goes round: it is shared by the company, and each person drinks from it in turn.
The porrón is handy at a shared table and at celebrations: no glasses are needed, and lips never touch the spout. Today it is seen at festivals and in restaurants.
The porrón resembles the leather wineskin "bota", from which people also drink in a stream. Both belong to the tradition of the Spanish table. They should be enjoyed in moderation.
