🍷 Burgundy glass
A very round-bowled glass for delicate red wines.
A Burgundy glass is a very rounded glass for delicate red wines. It has a wide round bowl that narrows toward the top, and thin walls. The glass is named after Burgundy, where Pinot Noir is made, and suits that grape in particular.
The wide bowl gives the wine more room to meet the air. The fine aroma of Pinot Noir opens up, and the narrowing at the top gathers the smells and directs them to the nose. The glass is held by the stem so the hand does not warm the wine. Only a little is poured, about a third, so the wine can be swirled and the aroma breathed in.
The Burgundy glass is one of the red wine glasses, but the most rounded of them. The Bordeaux glass is taller and narrower and suits fuller wines. At an ordinary table no special glass is needed: any clean one will do. But for wine lovers the difference between shapes is interesting, because it really changes the impression of aroma.
