π Shiroka Melnishka
A red grape from the town of Melnik in south-western Bulgaria.
Shiroka Melnishka Loza is an old red grape from the town of Melnik in southwestern Bulgaria. The name means "broad-leaved Melnik vine": it has broad leaves. It is a local variety that grows almost only in this area.
Melnik is a small town in the valley of the Struma river, not far from the border with Greece. The climate is warm and Mediterranean with mountain influences, and the soil is sandy. Vineyards also grow in the Sandanski area.
Wine from Shiroka Melnishka is dark and full, with the aroma of blackberry, plum, tobacco and spice, and noticeable tannin. In youth it can be harsh but softens with the years, and the best wines can age for decades.
The variety stands next to another Bulgarian grape, Ruen. Shiroka Melnishka is a source of pride for Bulgarian wine and a symbol of the Melnik region.
