The country's wine and winemaking: regions, grapes and appellations.

Bulgarian wine is wine from Bulgaria. The country has made it since ancient times: the Thracians who lived on this land knew grapes and wine even before the Romans. Today viticulture remains an important part of local life.

The country has several wine regions. They are the Danube Plain in the north, the Black Sea region in the east, the Rose Valley in the centre, the Thracian Lowland in the south and the Struma Valley in the south-west. Each area differs in climate: winters are colder in the north, and it is warm in the south and by the sea.

Both international and local grapes are grown. The best-known local reds are Mavrud, Shiroka Melnishka, Rubin and Pamid. Among whites are Dimiat and Misket. There are also varieties bred in Bulgaria, such as Bouquet and Rusalka. Some places have their own names, such as Sungurlarski Biser or Chernomorski Elixir.

Bulgarian wine belongs to the wines of Europe. Grape rakia, a strong distillate, is also made from grapes.
