📍 Sandanski
A warm valley by the Greek border.
Sandanski is a small wine district and town in south-western Bulgaria, in the Struma valley, at the foot of the Pirin Mountains and not far from the Greek border. The town is known as a spa with mineral springs. The Struma valley is the warmest wine area of the country: Mediterranean air reaches here, summers are hot and dry, and winters are mild.
“Sandanski” is not an official wine designation; it refers to the vineyards around the town, which belong to the larger Struma Valley area. Red grapes are grown, notably the local Shiroka Melnishka Loza (“broad-leaved Melnik vine”), giving dark wines with soft tannins and scents of plum and spice. Cabernet Sauvignon also grows.
The warm climate and mountain winds help the grapes ripen fully and stay healthy. Many estates are small, and wines go mostly to the local market and to resort restaurants.
For comparison with its neighbours: to the north lies the Melnik district, the smallest town in Bulgaria, known for the same vine, and to the east the Thracian Lowland with hotter and larger-scale winegrowing.
