An extinct volcano in western Hungary known for dense white Juhfark wines.

Somló is a wine district in western Hungary, on the slopes of an extinct volcano. The hill stands alone in the plain, and from afar it looks like a small mountain. The district is called Nagy-Somló, "Great Somló".

The soil on the volcanic hill is basalt and volcanic tuff, rich in minerals. The vine grows on warm south-facing slopes. Somló wines are full-bodied, with bright acidity and marked minerality, often with a smoky or salty note.

The main local grape is Juhfark. It is an old white variety whose name means "sheep's tail": the bunches are long and narrow. Besides it, Furmint, Hárslevelű and Welschriesling are grown. Somló wines are still white wines, and they keep well.

Somló is one of the most unusual white-wine districts of Hungary. Volcanic soil gives its wines a distinctive, recognisable character.
