📜 Tokaj wine region (Slovakia)

Appellation ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 1 Updated:

The Slovak part of famous Tokaj, with sweet wines from Furmint and Lipovina.

The Tokaj wine region in Slovakia is the small Slovak part of the famous Tokaj wine land. Most of it lies in Hungary, but a few villages are on the other side of the border, in south-eastern Slovakia, for example Malá Tŕňa and Slovenské Nové Mesto.

Mostly white wines are made here, among them sweet ones. The main grapes are Furmint, Hárslevelű (Lipovina in Slovak) and Muscat Yellow, known as Muscat Lunel. Noble rot attacks the berries in a warm autumn, and they partly dry on the vine. The sweetest wines with high acidity are made from such berries, and they are aged for a long time.

The name is protected as a PDO, a protected designation of origin. It is tied to a defined territory, and the wine must be made within its borders.

Slovak Tokaj is linked to the Tokaj tradition as a whole but has its own legislation. Both sweet and dry wines are made here, as well as still wines without bubbles.
