🍷 Wine ingredient list (EU 2023)

Concept ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 3 Updated:

Since December 2023, EU wine labels show ingredients and calories, often via a QR code.

Wine ingredient list (EU 2023) is the list of a wine's ingredients and calories, on the label or via a QR code, required in the European Union since December 2023. Since December 2023 wine in the European Union has had to show its ingredients and calories. This applies to wine produced from that date. The rules are set out in EU regulations on the wine market and labelling (including 2021/2117).

The calorie count, or energy value, must be printed right on the label. The full ingredient list and nutrition information may be shown not on the bottle but through a QR code. It leads to the producer's website. The list covers grapes, sugars, preservatives such as sulphur dioxide, acids and other additives used in production. Some substances that can cause allergies, such as sulphites, are stated separately and have been for longer.

The ingredient list is tied to the label as a whole and to the calorie content of wine: calories are now visible to the buyer. The aim of the rules is to give people more information about what is in the bottle. They do not say that wine is healthy or harmful.
