📜 Alentejano
A regional wine of the hot Alentejo plain in southern Portugal.
Alentejano is a regional wine with a protected geographical indication (PGI) from Alentejo, a hot plains area in southern Portugal. It is one of the country's largest wine areas. Summers here are dry and very warm, and winters are mild.
Red, white and rosé still wines are made under this name. Red grapes include Tempranillo (locally called Aragonez), Tinta Amarela and Alicante Bouschet. White grapes include Antão Vaz and Roupeiro. Red wines are usually soft and fruity, with rounded tannins. Whites come out fresh, although the heat gives them a rich taste.
Alentejano belongs to Portuguese wine and is a looser category than the stricter appellations inside Alentejo. This is convenient for producers, who can use different grapes and blends. Many bottles are inexpensive and served as everyday wines. The area is also known for its cork oak forests.
