Alsace Grand Cru Rangen is a grand cru vineyard near the town of Thann in Alsace, eastern France. It is the southernmost grand cru vineyard of the region and one of the steepest. The slopes are very steep, and the vines grow on terraces.
The soil is volcanic: dark rock, the remains of ancient volcanic deposits. It warms quickly and passes heat to the vine well. The grapes grown are Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer. Riesling from Rangen is known for mineral character and tense acidity, while Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer give dense, spicy wines.
White still wines are allowed, including sweet ones from late-picked grapes. Rangen lies in the Haut-Rhin département. Work on such slopes is hard, nearly everything is done by hand, so yields are small. It is one of those vineyards where the influence of soil on taste is especially clear.
