🍷 Bag-in-box wine
Wine in a bag with a tap inside a cardboard box; once opened it keeps for weeks.
Bag-in-box wine is wine in a bag with a tap, placed inside a cardboard box. The usual volume is two to five litres. This packaging was devised in the 1960s in Australia and spread quickly. It is especially popular in Sweden, France and some other countries.
The main advantage is that the wine inside the bag does not touch air. As wine is drawn off, the bag collapses and no air gets in. So opened wine keeps for several weeks rather than a few days as in a bottle. The box is light and cheap, easy to transport and takes little space. Bag-in-box wines are mostly simple table wines for everyday drinking.
Bag-in-box wine belongs to the types of wine and is related to table wine. The packaging is attractive from an environmental viewpoint: less weight and glass. But it is not suitable for long ageing: such wines are best drunk within a year. The box should be kept in a cool place.
