π· Vin nouveau
Very young wine of the same year, sold a few weeks after harvest.
Vin nouveau is very young wine from the new harvest, sold a few weeks after the grapes are picked. Vin nouveau (French for βnew wineβ) is very young wine from the harvest of the same year. It is sold a few weeks after the grapes are picked, when fermentation has only just finished. Such wine is not aged: it is fresh, fruity, light and soft.
The best known is Beaujolais Nouveau. In France it is released on the third Thursday of November, and the day is celebrated as a festival. Beaujolais is made from the Gamay grape, and fermentation is carried out in a special way in which whole berries ferment inside. This gives a light wine with the aroma of berries and banana. In Italy this type is called novello.
Nouveau is usually drunk chilled, in the first months after release. There is no point in ageing it: it is not made to be kept and loses freshness within a year.
Nouveau is one of the types of wine. Similar young wines are made in France, Italy and other countries. It shows how simple and seasonal wine can be. Alcohol is for adults.
