A sweet fortified wine from Grenache on seaside terraces near Banyuls, aged at least 30 months.

Banyuls grand cru is a sweet fortified wine from Grenache grown on terraces by the sea near Banyuls in the south of France, in Roussillon. The words "grand cru" are added to Banyuls when the wine is aged in barrels for at least thirty months.

The vineyards lie on steep terraces above the Mediterranean, near the border with Spain. The slopes are stony, windy and hot. Almost everything is done by hand. The grapes ripen with high sugar. During fermentation spirit is added to the juice, which stops fermentation and keeps the sweetness. The wine is then aged for a long time in barrels.

Banyuls is a sweet red wine with aromas of dried fruit, cocoa, coffee, nuts and spice. It is drunk in small portions, chilled, as a dessert or with chocolate. It is a fortified wine, so its strength is higher than usual. The appellation belongs to Roussillon. Banyuls grand cru shows how the sea and terraced slopes set the character of the wine, while ageing adds depth.
