Fortified sweet and dry wines from Grenache on schist around the village of Maury.

Maury is a French appellation in the south of the country, in Roussillon, at the foot of the Pyrenees. The name covers a strong sweet wine and dry red wines. Both types are made from Grenache on schist soils around the village of Maury. The area has a warm, dry, windy climate.

The sweet wine is called a “natural sweet” wine: grape spirit is added to the fermenting must, fermentation stops and some sugar remains. The wine is then aged in barrels or glass demijohns in the sun. The result is a dark, thick wine with aromas of prune, chocolate, nuts and coffee. With years it takes on nutty notes.

Dry red Maury on schist is powerful and mineral. White wines are also made. Sweet Maury is served in small glasses with desserts, chocolate and blue cheese.

Maury belongs to the fortified wines and to Roussillon. The main grape is Grenache, which loves a warm climate. The name is protected, like other French wines. Alcohol is for adults.
