🍇 Poulsard
A light red grape from the French Jura, giving pale, light wines.
Poulsard is a pale red grape from the Jura, a mountain area in eastern France near the Swiss border. In the local dialect it is called Ploussard. The berries have thin skins, so the wines are pale, almost like rosé, light and elegant, although they count as red.
The taste is delicate, with aromas of red berries, strawberry and spice. There are few tannins, so the wine can be drunk young and slightly chilled. The grape is grown in the areas of Arbois, Côtes du Jura and Macvin du Jura, and is also used for rosé wines and the sparkling Crémant du Jura.
The Jura is a cool area with cold winters and limestone-clay soils. Unusual wines are made here, such as vin jaune and vin de paille. Poulsard belongs to French wine and, with the local Trousseau, forms the red face of the region. For lovers of light reds it is interesting as a rarity far from the usual grapes.
