🍷 Macvin du Jura

Type of wine ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 4 Updated:

A drink from the Jura: grape juice blended with local grape brandy.

Macvin du Jura is a drink from the Jura region of eastern France. It is made from fresh grape juice mixed with local grape brandy. Such drinks are called mistelle.

The brandy is the one made from grape pomace, known as marc du Jura. Juice and brandy are mixed in set proportions, fermentation stops at once, and the natural sweetness stays in the drink. The drink is then aged in oak barrels. Its strength is around 16 to 22 percent.

Macvin comes white and red. The white is often made from Chardonnay and Savagnin, the red from Poulsard and Trousseau, local red grapes. It is drunk chilled as an aperitif and is also used in desserts.

Macvin is like other mistelles, for example Pineau des Charentes in the Charente. It is a local drink tied to French wine, from the Jura region and its wine area of the same name.
