📜 Arbois
The main Jura appellation around the town of Arbois, where the famous yellow wine is also made.
Arbois is the main appellation of the Jura in France, around the town of Arbois. The famous yellow wine is made here too. The name is protected as a PDO. Arbois was one of the first French designations to receive AOC status, in 1936.
The Jura lies in eastern France by the Swiss border and is a hilly, mountainous area. Vineyards grow on limestone and clay soils. Familiar grapes, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, are grown here, as well as local ones: Savagnin (Traminer), Poulsard and Trousseau (Bastardo). Red, white and rosé wines are made, and also sweet straw wine.
The Jura's most special wine is vin jaune, "yellow wine". It is made from Savagnin and aged in barrels under a film of yeast for at least six years. The result is a nutty-tasting drink unlike any other. Arbois is also tied to Louis Pasteur: the scientist grew up in this town and studied fermentation here. Arbois wines are served with Comté cheese, made in the same area, and with poultry. It is one of France's most unusual wine areas.
