📍 Kherson region
A steppe region on the lower Dnipro known for wines and brandy.
The Kherson region, or Khersonshchyna, is a steppe region in southern Ukraine, in the lower reaches of the Dnipro river. Summers are hot, rain is scarce and sun is plentiful. Grapes are grown, and wines and brandy are made.
A large wine zone is Tavria, the plain along the Dnipro. A special territory is the Oleshky Sands, a large area of sands where grapes grow on sandy soil. Sand holds water poorly, so the vine grows without excess moisture and gives berries with high sugar. Another place is the Beryslav district.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Bastardo, Aligoté and Rkatsiteli are grown here. Dry and sweet wines are made from them. Part of the grapes goes into grape spirit and brandy, and also into sparkling wines.
The Kherson region is part of Ukrainian wine, one of the main southern zones of the country. For Ukraine it is a region where viticulture is closely tied to the steppe and the river.
