🥃 Brugal Extra Viejo
The older version of Dominican Brugal rum: a blend matured in former American whiskey casks, with the age given as a range.
Brugal Extra Viejo is the older version of Dominican rum from Brugal, older than the Añejo. The producer calls it the first premium rum of the Dominican Republic. Such a blend was first made in 1976. The age is given as a range rather than a single number, so check the strength on the label.
According to Difford's Guide, it is a blend of Dominican rums matured in former American whiskey casks, and the Gran Reserva Familiar contains a larger share of the older rums. Sources give the age range differently: Difford's Guide writes of three to eight years, while Cigar Aficionado writes of five to eight. For this reason, it is better to check the figures against the label.
Why this matters to you. The name Extra Viejo does not mean a specific age. Compare it with the Añejo (the younger blend), the Brugal XV and the Brugal 1888 by age range and casks. The best choice depends on your taste and how you drink, not on the big words on the bottle. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe amount of alcohol.
