🍇 Chambourcin

Grape variety ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 3

A red hybrid grape bred in France, popular in the USA and Australia.

Chambourcin is a red hybrid grape. It was bred in France by Joannes Seyve and has been available since the 1960s. Its parentage includes several North American Vitis species and Vitis vinifera. Like other hybrids, it came from crossing different vine species.

The variety is valued for its resistance to disease and damp climates. So it is grown where ordinary European grapes do poorly: in the eastern states of the USA, in Australia and elsewhere. In the USA it is considered one of the most successful red hybrids.

Chambourcin wine is dark, with the aroma of berries and plum, soft tannin and moderate acidity. It is drunk young, but sometimes aged in barrel. In some countries the grape is also used for rosé.

Chambourcin shows how breeders try to combine wine quality with vine resilience. It has also been used as a parent of a newer variety, Regent.
