A Margaux estate in Cantenac founded more than 200 years ago by the Scot John-Lewis Brown, known for its Tudor-style château; run by the Le Lous family; a third growth of 1855.

Château Cantenac-Brown is a wine estate in Cantenac, in the heart of the Margaux appellation in the Médoc. According to the estate, it was founded more than 200 years ago by the Scotsman John-Lewis Brown, of the Brown of Colstoun clan, who chose its plots and planted the arboretum around the house. The emblem of the property is its Tudor-style château, a reminder of these Scottish roots.

Today the French Le Lous family heads the estate; Tristan Le Lous runs it together with José Sanfins, and in 2020 they began building a new winery made entirely of raw earth. According to the estate, the 75 ha vineyard lies on the gravel plateaus of Margaux and Cantenac. Its wines are Château Cantenac Brown, BriO de Cantenac Brown and AltO de Cantenac Brown.

Margaux is a protected designation of origin (PDO) for red wines made within a delimited area. In the 1855 classification, kept today by the Conseil des Grands Crus Classés en 1855, Cantenac Brown is a Troisième Cru (third growth).

Why it matters to you. The commune named on the address (Cantenac) and the PDO on the label (Margaux) can differ: the Margaux PDO covers several communes. The WHO reminds: there is no safe level of alcohol.
