🏰 Château Latour
Also known as: Latour
A Pauillac estate by the Gironde estuary, documented since 1331; owned since 1993 by François Pinault’s Artémis; a first growth of the 1855 classification.
Château Latour is a wine estate in Pauillac, in the Médoc, about 300 metres from the Gironde estuary. According to the estate, the oldest document mentioning Latour dates from 1331, when a fortified tower was authorised in the parish of Saint-Maubert. Through marriages and inheritance it passed to the Ségur family, whose descendants held it until 1962; in June 1993 François Pinault bought it through his holding company Artémis.
According to the estate, the vineyard covers 96.5 ha, including the 47 ha “Enclos” around the château, planted with about 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. It makes three red wines: the Grand Vin, Les Forts de Latour and Le Pauillac de Château Latour. The vineyard has been certified organic since 2018, and since 2012 the estate no longer sells its wines en primeur.
Pauillac is a protected designation of origin (PDO) for red wines made within a delimited area. In the 1855 classification, kept today by the Conseil des Grands Crus Classés en 1855, Latour is one of the Premiers Crus of the Médoc.
Why it matters to you. One estate can bottle several wines under the same PDO: Les Forts de Latour and the Pauillac come from the same château but not from the Enclos selection of the Grand Vin. The WHO reminds: there is no safe level of alcohol.
