🏰 Château Pontet-Canet
Also known as: Pontet-Canet
A Pauillac estate created from 1705 by Jean-François de Pontet, owned by the Tesseron family since 1975 and farmed organically and biodynamically; a fifth growth of 1855.
Château Pontet-Canet is a wine estate north of Pauillac, in the Médoc. According to the estate, from 1705 Jean-François de Pontet gathered land here to create a vineyard, in 1757 he acquired a property at the Canet site, and in 1781 the estate took the name Château Pontet-Canet. In 1865 the merchant Henri Herman Cruse bought it and later had new cellars built.
In 1975 Guy Tesseron, a Cognac producer and merchant, bought the estate; his son Alfred Tesseron took over its management in 1994, and his granddaughter Justine Tesseron joined in 2015. According to the estate, the vineyard covers 81 ha with about 800,000 vines in some hundred plots, and it was the first grand cru classé to hold both organic and biodynamic certification for its entire vineyard.
Pauillac is a protected designation of origin (PDO) for red wines made within a delimited area. In the 1855 classification, kept today by the Conseil des Grands Crus Classés en 1855, Pontet-Canet is a Cinquième Cru (fifth growth).
Why it matters to you. Organic and biodynamic labels are separate certifications about farming; they say nothing about the classification rank or the alcohol content. The WHO reminds: there is no safe level of alcohol.
