Appellation ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 1 Updated:

Sweet white wines from Chenin Blanc from the slopes of the Layon valley in Anjou.

Coteaux du Layon is an appellation for sweet white wines from the Layon river valley in Anjou, in the western Loire Valley of France. It is a protected designation of origin (PDO). The vineyards grow on slopes facing the river.

There is one main grape here, Chenin Blanc. Berries are picked late, when they are overripe and some are affected by noble rot. The rot concentrates sugar and aroma, and the wine turns sweet and refined. Picking is done by hand in several passes, choosing the best berries.

Sweet Layon wines usually combine honey, quince and fresh acidity, which keeps them from feeling heavy. Such wines can keep for a long time. The appellation belongs to the Anjou-Saumur area. The best sites in the valley have their own, narrower names. The wine shows best with age, when honey and dried fruit appear in it. It is usually served chilled, with pâtés, blue cheese and fruit desserts.
