🍇 Chenin Blanc
A white grape from the Loire Valley; it makes dry, sweet and sparkling wines and is widely grown in South Africa.
Chenin Blanc is a white grape from the Loire valley in France. It is one of the most versatile varieties: dry, off-dry, sweet and sparkling wines are made from it. High acidity is its mark, and lets the wines keep for a long time. Flavours include apple, quince, honey and flowers.
On the Loire, Chenin Blanc grows in Anjou, Saumur, Vouvray, Savennières, Chinon and Touraine. In Vouvray everything is made, from dry to sweet and sparkling. In Savennières the wine is usually dry and mineral. Saumur and Crémant de Loire are sparkling wines. The grape is also used in Crémant de Limoux in the south. Outside France it is widely grown in South Africa, where it is called Steen and is the most planted variety.
In sweet wines Chenin Blanc is affected by noble rot, which concentrates the sugar. The grape is related to other varieties, such as Meslier-Saint-François and Colombard. The wine pairs well with fish, chicken and cheese. It is one of the most versatile white grapes in the world.
