📍 Anjou-Saumur
Schist and tuffeau with Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc and rosés.
Anjou-Saumur is a historic wine area in the Loire Valley in France, around the cities of Angers and Saumur. There are two main types of soil here. In Anjou dark schist dominates, which is why the area is called Black Anjou. In Saumur pale tuffeau limestone dominates, and this part is called White Anjou.
The main grapes are Chenin Blanc for whites and Cabernet Franc for reds and rosés. White wines can be dry, sweet or sparkling. Savennières gives austere dry whites, Coteaux du Layon sweet ones. Cabernet Franc makes red wines such as Saumur-Champigny, and also rosés: Rosé d'Anjou and Cabernet d'Anjou. Sparkling wines made by the classic method are also known.
Anjou-Saumur is part of the Loire Valley. It includes dozens of appellations: Anjou, Anjou Villages, Anjou-Brissac, Bonnezeaux, Quarts de Chaume, Coteaux de Saumur, Coteaux de l'Aubance and others. The area is known for variety and relatively fair prices. The wines combine well with fish, poultry and goat cheese.
