Steep slopes of the Pelješac peninsula above the sea, where Plavac Mali makes powerful red wines.

Dingač is the steep slopes of the Pelješac peninsula in Croatia, where powerful red wines are made from the Plavac Mali grape. The slopes drop straight to the sea and face south. The grapes get direct sun, and light reflected from the sea adds warmth. As a result the berries gather a lot of sugar.

Dingač wine is thick and dark, high in alcohol, with notes of dried plum, currant and spice. Dingač became the first Croatian wine to receive protected designation of origin, in 1961. Work on such slopes is hard: the vineyards are difficult to tend by hand, and in the past the harvest had to be carried out by donkey.

Dingač lies in Central and Southern Dalmatia. The wine is protected as a PDO and made only from Plavac Mali. It is worth ageing for a few years to let the tannins soften. It is served with meat, game and aged cheeses. Dingač shows that the Dalmatian coast produces wines of strong character that reflect land and sun.
