🍇 Plavac Mali
A red Croatian grape from Dalmatia giving strong, dense wines.
Plavac Mali is a red Croatian grape from Dalmatia. The name means "small blue". It grows on sunny, stony slopes by the Adriatic. The berries are small with thick skins, so the wine is dark, full and strong.
The main areas are Central and Southern Dalmatia and the Pelješac peninsula, where the grape makes the famous wines Dingač and Postup. Dingač grows on very steep slopes above the sea, where the grapes receive light both from the sun and reflected from the water. The wine is rich, with notes of dried fruit, cherry, herbs and spice, high alcohol and noticeable tannins. It ages well.
DNA research shows it is a cross of Crljenak Kaštelanski (Zinfandel) and Dobričić. Plavac Mali belongs to Croatian wine and to the grapes of coastal Croatia. The wine is served with grilled meat, lamb and cheese. Because of its strength and density it is better drunk in small glasses, in moderation.
