The best-known white wine from around Rome, made from Malvasia and Trebbiano.

Frascati is the best-known white wine of the area around Rome, in the Lazio region of Italy. It is made in and around the town of Frascati, in the Castelli Romani hills south-east of the capital. The wine is based on Malvasia (including Malvasia del Lazio and Malvasia di Candia) and Trebbiano.

The Castelli Romani hills are of volcanic origin. They were formed by an ancient volcano, and the soils here are light, porous and rich in minerals. The climate is mild, influenced by Rome and the Tyrrhenian Sea. The grapes grow on low slopes.

Frascati is usually a pale, fresh wine with aromas of flowers, pear and almond, and a slight bitterness in the finish. Dry, off-dry and sweet versions exist, as well as sparkling. The wine is drunk young and chilled. It suits Roman cooking well: pasta, fish and vegetables.

Frascati is tied to Rome: for many centuries Romans went to nearby taverns for this wine. The name is protected, and genuine Frascati is made only in this area. It is one of the white wines of Lazio and Italy. Alcohol is for adults.
