📜 Montlouis-sur-Loire
White wines from Chenin Blanc across the Loire from Vouvray.
Montlouis-sur-Loire is an appellation in Touraine, in the Loire valley in western France. It lies on the left bank of the river, opposite Vouvray. The name is protected as a PDO. White wines are made here from Chenin Blanc: dry, off-dry, sweet and sparkling.
Chenin Blanc is a grape with high acidity, and that is what allows wines of different styles to be made. Dry wines are fresh, with notes of quince, apple and honey. Sweet wines come from grapes affected by noble rot or picked late. Sparkling wines are made in the same way as Champagne.
The soils of Montlouis are limestone, clay and flint, often with sand. Wines from sandy sites are usually lighter and softer, from limestone more full-bodied. Montlouis is considered a slightly lighter and earlier-drinking alternative to Vouvray. Many wineries here are small and family-run, and the vineyards lie on slopes.
Montlouis wines keep well: the best sweet ones age for decades. They are served with fish, goat's cheese and desserts.
