📜 Gattinara

Appellation ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 1 Updated:

A red from Nebbiolo in northern Piedmont, at the foot of the Alps.

Gattinara is a red wine from the Nebbiolo grape in northern Piedmont, Italy. Here Nebbiolo is called Spanna. The vineyards lie on slopes at the foot of the Alps, in the area known as Alto Piemonte. The name is protected and belongs to the top level of Italian wines with guaranteed origin.

The soils here are of volcanic origin: poor, acidic and rich in minerals. The climate is cooler than in the Langhe, where Barolo is made, and nights are cold. The grapes ripen slowly.

The wine is red, with bright acidity and firm tannins, and aromas of red berries, flowers and spice. It is aged for years, and the taste softens with time. It goes with meat dishes, game and aged cheeses.

Gattinara is one of the best-known wines of Alto Piemonte, next to Ghemme. Nebbiolo may be blended with a small share of other local grapes. Alcohol is for adults and best taken in moderation.
