🥃 Hakushu 25 Years Old
The oldest Hakushu expression: a whisky of at least 25 years, rich and smoky; 43% ABV according to Whisky Advocate.
Hakushu 25 Years Old is the oldest expression from the Hakushu distillery. Suntory's official website calls it the most mature Hakushu: deep yet fresh, with smoky notes. The strength is 43% ABV, according to a Whisky Advocate review. The youngest whisky in it is at least 25 years old.
The whisky is made from barley malt at the distillery near Mount Kaikomagatake; after a quarter of a century in oak casks the taste becomes rich. The official website describes plum, caramel, crème brûlée, sage, lavender and baked pineapple with a long smoky finish. Whisky Advocate reviewer Dave Broom noted a greater influence of sherry and a more pronounced smoke than in the younger versions.
Why this matters to you. Compared with Hakushu 18 Years Old, there is more cask, sherry and smoke, while the freshness of the distillery remains underneath. Because of the age, few bottles are released, and it is best tasted neat, without ice, to keep the details. The WHO notes that there is no safe amount of alcohol consumption.
