🥃 Nikka Coffey Malt
Japanese whisky from 100% malted barley, distilled in a Coffey still at Miyagikyo; formally a grain whisky; 45% ABV, since 2013.
Nikka Coffey Malt is a Japanese whisky from Nikka, made from 100% malted barley and distilled in a Coffey column still. Although the raw material is the same as in single malt whisky, it is formally a grain whisky, because only whisky from pot stills is called malt. Its strength is 45% ABV, and there is no age statement. The producer gives 2013 as the year it appeared.
According to Whisky Advocate (Dave Broom, 2014), the whisky is distilled in Coffey stills at the Miyagikyo distillery, and it has become a permanent part of the range. The continuous still keeps more of the raw material's flavour than modern columns. The producer writes that it matures in old casks, and describes a silky texture and a rich malty taste.
Why this matters to you. Compare it with Nikka Coffey Grain: the still is the same, and the difference comes from the raw material, malt instead of corn. Miyagikyo Single Malt shows the same malt from pot stills. The WHO reminds us that there is no safe amount of alcohol.
