🥃 Japanese whisky

Spirit drink ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 6 Updated:

Whisky made entirely in Japan: aged at least 3 years in wooden casks up to 700 L and bottled in Japan at 40% ABV or more.

Japanese whisky is whisky that, under the standard of the Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Association (JSLMA), is made entirely in Japan: from malt, other grains and Japanese water, saccharified, fermented and distilled at a Japanese distillery, aged at least three years in wooden casks of up to 700 L and bottled in Japan at 40% ABV or more.

Japan’s 1953 Liquor Tax Act defines whisky far more broadly. It is a distillate of fermented mash from malted grain, distilled below 95% ABV, to which alcohol, other spirits, flavourings, colourings and water may be added, provided the share of alcohol from whisky is at least 10%. The law sets no minimum ageing period.

That is why on 12 February 2021 the JSLMA adopted its own labelling standard for “Japanese whisky”. It applies from 1 April 2021, and products already sold under that name received a transition period until 31 March 2024. Malt is mandatory, plain caramel colouring is the only permitted additive, and the words “Japanese” and “whisky” must stand side by side with nothing between them.

The standard also bans workarounds: “Japan whisky”, “Nihon whisky”, translations, and the words “type” or “style”. If a drink does not meet the requirements, its label may not carry Japanese names, names of cities, mountains or rivers, a flag or the name of a Japanese era without an explanation. The association points out that abroad even whisky made only from imported spirits has been sold as “Japanese”. For compliant products it introduced the “JW” logo.

Why this matters to you. The words “Japanese whisky” on the bottle of a JSLMA member mean Japanese raw materials, distillation and at least three years of ageing in Japan. A plain “whisky” from a Japanese company may contain imported whisky or added alcohol, so check the label and the JW logo. The standard is voluntary and does not replace the law. WHO reminds: there is no safe dose of alcohol.

Frequently asked questions

What is Japanese whisky under the rules?

Under the 2021 JSLMA standard, it is whisky made from malt, other grains and water drawn in Japan, saccharified, fermented and distilled (below 95% ABV) at a Japanese distillery, aged in Japan for at least 3 years in wooden casks of up to 700 L and bottled there at 40% ABV or more.

Is it true that any whisky from a Japanese brand is “Japanese whisky”?

No. The Liquor Tax Act allows a blend to be called whisky when only 10% or more of its alcohol comes from whisky, and it requires no ageing. The JSLMA standard allows the name “Japanese whisky” only for a drink made and aged entirely in Japan.

How long must Japanese whisky be aged?

At least three years in Japan, in wooden casks of up to 700 L. The standard does not specify the type of wood.

May colouring be added to Japanese whisky?

Only plain caramel colouring. The standard provides for no other additives in “Japanese whisky”.

What does the JW logo on the bottle mean?

It is a JSLMA mark: “JW” in the centre of a cask head together with the words “JAPANESE WHISKY”. Association members place it on products that meet the standard; the mark is already registered as a trademark in Japan.
