🥃 Hakushu 12 Years Old
Lightly peated Hakushu single malt aged 12 years, 43% ABV; production stopped in 2018 and it returned in Japan in 2021.
Hakushu 12 Years Old is the core age-stated expression from the Hakushu distillery. Suntory's official website calls it a lightly peated single malt whisky. The strength is 43% ABV, according to Whisky Advocate (a 2023 review). The youngest whisky in the blend is at least 12 years old.
According to Time Out Tokyo, production was halted in June 2018 because demand for Japanese whisky had exhausted stocks, and on 30 March 2021 it reappeared in Japan, though in limited quantities. The whisky is made from barley malt at the distillery in the forest near Mount Kaikomagatake. The official website describes the taste as basil, pine needles, green apple, pear, mint and green tea with a light smoke.
Why this matters to you. Hakushu Distiller's Reserve is lighter and has no age statement, while Hakushu 18 Years Old is deeper and woodier. If you want to taste the classic style of the distillery, compare it with the 12-year-old. The WHO notes that there is no safe amount of alcohol consumption.
