📍 Hessische Bergstraße

Appellation ✔ Checked: 10.2026 · sources: 6 Updated:

The country's smallest region, with early blossoming.

Hessische Bergstraße is the smallest of Germany's 13 wine regions. It lies in the east of the Rhine plain, at the foot of the Odenwald mountains, south of Frankfurt am Main and Darmstadt. It is part of German winemaking.

The climate is one of the warmest in the country. Blossom starts earlier than in other regions, and winters are mild. Vineyards lie on slopes of loess and sand, sheltered from cold winds by the hills.

The region has two districts: Starkenburg in the south and Umstadt in the north. The main grapes are Riesling and Pinot Gris (Grauburgunder), with Müller-Thurgau and others also grown. Wines are mostly white, dry and fresh, but reds are made too.

The vineyard area is very small, so wines rarely leave the region. For visitors there are hill walks and wine taverns in the villages. Frankfurt lies to the north and Baden to the south, and the region sits between them. Riesling from local vineyards goes well with fish, poultry and rice dishes, and the red is best with meat.
