🍇 Lagrein
A red grape of South Tyrol in northern Italy.
Lagrein is a red grape from South Tyrol in northern Italy, in the Adige valley near the city of Bolzano. The wines are dark and dense, with aromas of blackberry, violet and chocolate, moderate tannins and a soft finish. It is one of the region's striking local varieties.
The grape is related to Teroldego and Blauer Urban. It is grown on warm, sheltered slopes of the valley and on cooler high sites. Lagrein is made not only into red but also into rosé, called Kretzer. It is fresh and fruity and is served chilled in summer. The red can be easy-drinking or more serious, aged in oak.
Lagrein belongs to Italian wine. It is part of the Alto Adige and Trentino-Alto Adige wine zones, where the key feature is the blend of Italian and German traditions. It suits meat, game and smoked meats. In recent years the grape has become more popular outside its region, and it has begun to be grown in other countries.
