π Teroldego
A red grape from Trentino, Italy, that makes dark, fruity wines.
Teroldego is a red grape from Trentino in northern Italy. It grows mainly on the Rotaliano plain in the Adige valley, where its wines have their own appellation, Teroldego Rotaliano. The variety is old and local, and elsewhere it is almost unknown.
Teroldego wine is dark, almost inky, with aromas of blackberry, black cherry, plum and violet. Tannins are soft and acidity fresh. It can be light and fruity for drinking young, or fuller and aged. RosΓ© is also made from the same grape. The soils of the plain are gravel and sand deposited by the river, and the mountains around give cool nights.
Teroldego is related to other local varieties: Lagrein and Rebo. It belongs to Italian wine and to the grapes of Trentino-Alto Adige. The wine is served with meat, charcuterie and cheese, with traditional Trentino cooking. It is a good example of an alpine red: aromatic, fresh and approachable.
